AirTran Airways is an US-based low-cost airline. A subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, AirTran operates over 1,000 daily flights, primarily in the eastern and midwestern United States. AirTran's principal hubs are Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where it operates over 270 daily departures, General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It maintains secondary hub ops at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Orlando International Airport. In a deal announced on September 27, 2010, Southwest Airlines agreed to buy AirTran for approximately $1.4 billion.

Merged ops into AirTran AW in 1998. Minority stake acquired by Boeing in 2001 through conversion of convertiable debt. Offered merger proposal to Midwest AL on 13/12/06, cancelled. Purchased by Southwest for $3.4b (announced 27/9/10, approved 25/2/11 by FAA and 26/4/11 by DoJ, single AOC granted 1/3/12, planned legal completion 2/5/11).
