Formed by Richard Branson. Became briefly a public company in 1986 until 1988. Continental's plan to acquire a 40% share failed during 1998. 49% share acquired in 1999 by Singapore AL. Expected to create subsidiary Virgin USA in mid-2004 for low-cost ops (later Virgin America, to launch late 2007). Announced in 6/07 plan for a business-class only subsidiary with up to 15 transatlantic aircraft to be launched in 2009. IPO being considered in late 2007. Singapore shares sold in 12/12 to Delta.
