Absorbed NAC in 1978. Privatized in 1989 when 19.9%, 7.5%, 7.5% of stocks acquired respectively by Qantas, JAL, American. JAL stake resold 1995. Qantas stake sold in 1997. Joined Star Alliance partnership in 1999. 8.3% stake acquisition from Singapore AL acquired in 2000, immediately extended to 25%. Temporarily target of significant stake by Qantas in 2001. Singapore AL share reduced to 5.9% in 2001 after NZ government completed bail out, may be reduced to 4.25% subject to NZ loans converted to shares. 4.99% acquired in 2003 by Qantas, was to be increased to 22.5% but rejected but NZ authorities; resold in 6/07 with a 21% profit. 7.8% stake by BIL Int'l (formerly Brierley Investments) resold to institutional companies in 2004. Formed by joint UK/Australia/NZ venture for trans-Tasman ops with shareholders being UK's Imperial AW (20%), Qantas (30%) and Union AW (50%, holding company formed by NZ government and Union Steamship Company Ltd). UK withdrew in 1954. Nationalized in 1961. Renamed 1/4/65 to Air New Zealand.
