Formed 7/10/1919 by Albert Plesman, starting ops on 17/5/1920. Proposed alliance in 1959-1962 with Lufthansa, Air France, Sabena, TAI, UAT under the Air Union name was abandoned. Formed KSSU alliance with SAS, Swissair and UTA for joint purchase and maintenance of aircraft. Attempted merger with British AW failed in 1991. Aborted Alcazar merger project (30%) with SAS, Swissair, AUA in 1993. Discussions for possible merger with Alitalia then with British AW failed in 2000. In 2003 formed holding Air France-KLM with Air France with 81% stake from Air France (French government 34.4% being reduced to 20%) and 19% from KLM private investors. Joined SkyTeam alliance after merger completion on 15/9/04.
