32% stake taken in 1994 by Malaysian Helicopter Service. 29.1% purchased by Malaysian government from chairman for onward sale in 2001. Split on 16/8/02 between government-owned domestic subsidiary and private int'l pax/cargo & domestic cargosubsidiary with 69.4% ownership transferred to newly formed PMB/Penerbangan Malaysia (owned by Malaysia's Ministry of Finance; later a subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Bhd). Formed subsidiary MASWings for domestic/regional service in 6/07. Joined OneWorld alliance (announced 6/6/11, effective 1/2/13). Share swap announced 9/8/11 with AirAsia: 20.5% of Malaysia Airlines transferred to AirAsia's parent Tune Air while 10% of AirAsia transferred to Khazanah Nasional Bhd; plan abandonned on 2/5/12. Privatization plans shelved in 8/13 re-launched in mid-2014 following the loss of 777 9M-MRO, abandoned on 8/8/14 after the loss of B777 9M-MRD when government announced its take over of all shares through its sovereign fund Khazanah Nasional Berhad. Placed in voluntary administration on 25/5/15; new AOC granted effective 1/9/15.
