Formed by DRB-Hicom. Acquired on 8/9/01 by Tune Group (Tony Fernandes and 4 partners) for MYR 1 with liabilities of MYR40m, and changed its business model to LCC (Low-Cost Carrier). 26% acquired in 2003 by Shin Corp (majority-owned by Malaysia's Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra). Partial IPO planned for 11/04, reducing Tune's share to 44.8% (down to 32.8% by late 2006). Launched long-range LCC ops by purchasing FAX, renamed AirAsia X (qv). Announced in 10/08 plans to become a private company in 2009. Share swap announced 9/8/11 with Malaysia Airlines: 20.5% of Malaysia AL transferred to AirAsia's parent Tune Air while 10% of AirAsia transferred to Khazanah Nasional Bhd; plan abandonned on 2/5/12.
