Italy Roma-Fiumicino 2002-
2% stake acquired in 2003 by Air France (62.3% still with Italian government). 40% of subsidiary Alitalia Maintenance Systems acquired in 2003 by Lufthansa Technik. Government share reduced below 49% by 2005 under EU approval of financial rescue loan in 2004 (effectively reduced from 62.394% to 49.893% on 27/12/05 with Newton Investment Management and Norges Bank taking 4.223% and 2.223% respectively). Up to 49.9% offered early 2007 by Italian government with expressions of interest received from Texas Pacific Group (withdrew 5/07), AP Holding (Air One, partnered with Intesa Sanpaolo bank, withdrew 17/7/07), Lefinalc (Air Dolomiti, withdrew early 2007), Terra Firma Investments (withdrew early 2007), Aeroflot (in partnership with Unicredit; pulled out 27/6/07, again 19/11/07), Air France/KLM. Latter offer finally accepted by board on 21/12/07 with government approval during 1/08; negociations stalled and severed on 3/4/08. €300m emergency loan from Italian government announced in 5/08. Shares trading suspended early 6/08 on Milan stock exchange. New rescue plan with fresh investment from 16 private Italian companies led by Intesa Sanpaolo and Piaggio presented in 8/08. Filed for bankrupcy protection on 29/8/08 (after changes of Italian anti-trust laws to allow market dominance of bankrupt companies), expected to be reorganised as Compagnia Aerea Italiana, keeping core business units (excluding cargo) and taking over Air One. Provisional 6-month AOC granted 9/08 during reorganization process. Rescue plan withdrawn on 18/9/08, re-activated 29/9/08, withdrawn again on 31/10/08 and reactivated in the following week. Financial assets and liabilities transferred 1/12/08 to CAI/Compagnia Aerea Italiana (with new AOC granted on 12/1/09). 25% purchased in 2009Q1 by Air France for €323m (approved 9/1/09 by AF board, 12/1/09 by AZ board, completed 3/09).
