Formed 1/7/88 by CAAC Beijing division. Includes Tianjin division also known as Tian-Jin Airlines. Designated as managing "Group One" of Chinese airlines in 2001, formed parent company China National Aviation Holding Co on 11/10/02, taking over China Southwest and China National Avn Corp. Became a joint-stock company 30/9/04, partial IPO (27%-28%) planned for 2005 (with Lufthansa expected to bid for 10%). 9.9% acquired by Cathay Pacific in 10/04 for $383m. Became a public company in 12/04 through an IPO at the Hong Kong stock exchange (70% remains at China National Aviation Holding Co, also major shareholder of DragonAir and Air Macau).
