    Formed by Belgium's Virgin Express (member of Virgin Group), originally planned as Virgin Australia. Attempted buy-out by Air New Zealand rejected in 2001. Majority stake acquired by Lang Corporation in 2001. 50% taken by Patrick Corp cargo company in 2002. Started brand PacificBlue in 2003 for Christchurch-based operarions with 2 737-800 following an agreement with Singapore AL prohibiting the use of the "Virgin" name outside Australia. IPO in 2003, reducing Virgin Group's stake to 25.1% and Patrick Corp stake to 49%, later 45.4%, increased to 62.4% by 2005. Hostile take-over of Patrick Corp launched by Toll Holdings, Australia in 8/05 and accepted 4/06. Set-up division "V Australia" for trans-pacific flights from 2008 (name unveiled 26/7/07). Toll Holdings expected to sell its 62.4% share during fall 2007, eventually decided in 4/08 to keep shares, reversed again 7/08. Minority share (14.99%) purchased 20/1/11 by Air New Zealand, increased to 19.99% in mid-2011. Renamed Virgin Australia on 4/5/11 (parent company Virgin Blue Holdings renamed to Virgin Australia Holdings on 7/12/11).
