XL Airways France is a French airline with its head office in Bâtiment Mars in the grounds of Charles de Gaulle Airport and in Tremblay-en-France, France. The airline operates scheduled flights mainly to long-haul destinations in Africa and the Middle East and charter flights to medium-haul destinations in the Mediterranean, and it also serves destinations to the Caribbean.
Formed as Star Airlines (Société de Transport Aérien Régional) in 1995 by Cédric Pastrour, the airline was previously owned by Transat A.T., before being sold to and taken over by the XL Leisure Group.[citation needed] On 23 November 2006 Star Airlines changed its name to XL Airways France. On 11 September 2008, it was announced that the XL Leisure Group had filed for administration, although initially Simon Calder confirmed the group's website was still taking bookings, the group folded the next morning on 12 September. The same day, Straumur-Burdaras Investment Bank acquired XL Airways France and its German sister company, XL Airways Germany.
